He tugs on the hem one of Albus' sleeves, as ever tactile to a fault. He's still studying him hungrily, like he can't get enough. Were he any closer, they'd be pressed flush and he could curl arms around his neck like conspiring lovers - but he doesn't do that, not when Albus is acting so strange. No, he wants to know first.
"The last thing I remember? We were sitting out on the grounds picking apart a charm. Do you remember the one? It was a simple locking charm, but the magic in it was so beautiful. No, I don't suppose you would forget. You always remember everything."

"I remember," Albus says, his words softening. "It was a locket. The charm would only trigger when a specific touch was pressed upon it. If I remember, there was more than the weaving of the charm we found beautiful."

"The sentiment behind it. The love." The love that Gellert can't feel but is so curious about on an intellectual level, on how it brings even the most brilliant to their knees. If he could be sorry for not loving Albus back, he would be. He's as fond of him as he's capable of, treats him with as much affection and care as he has in him, but actual love is beyond his understanding.
(Sometimes he wishes he could feel it. It seems so much more complicated but so much more simple all at once.)
"I still have it with me," he says suddenly, "I'd set it away because we were going to go eat lunch."

The touch on his wrist made his skin burn. He wanted to lift his hand and cradle it against his chest, savoring and loathing the touch at the same time. Even now Gellert was dangerous to him. Albus never realized how weak he was until he was in the other man's presence.
The declaration that Gellert still had the locket gave Albus pause. "May I see it?" he asks.

Instead, he smiles.
"Of course," Gellert replies, shifting to remove it from his pocket and carefully hand it over to Albus. He makes sure their fingers brush on the exchange, just a little. It's not as though it's avoidable, anyway. The locket is full of their magic now along with the original charm and there's something romantic about it, their magic melding with the intended purpose and not choking it, but examining it.
"It's been strange, being here without you. I've wanted to try and pick things apart with you, try to figure out things. A woman in the Ministry seemed frightened of me and I have no idea why."
no subject
"I believe there were other ways I was intent to show you that love was more than a cruel joke." Albus met Gellert's gaze, his eyebrow raising in a mischevious arc that implicated the double meaning in his words. "You always did prefer I show rather than tell."
The moment of humor gone, Albus held out the locket, returning it to its new owner. "You'll find that many things are different here. I purchased a sweet from a shop and discovered a strange card inside. I had the most terrific beard."
He didn't go into details regarding the woman from the Ministry. There was a time and a place for such revelations. Standing in the middle of Knockturn Alley was not the proper place. "I have a flat nearby in London," he says suddenly. "We should talk."

Taking back the locket, he tucks it away. Gellert is so young and he should be so impressionable but he's so set, so intense and insistent in his beliefs, that there's no shaking him. That's not the point though: at the mention of a beard Gellert lets out an almost-startled laugh, reaching out to touch the older wizard's chin. "It must have been magnificent. I'll stick to seeing you like this for now, though."
As for the rest--Gellert frowns briefly before nodding, taking a step back and holding out his hand. "Side-along? Take me there, Albus." Gellert knows well enough how to Apparate, but technically isn't allowed to by law, and so - he needs Albus to do it for him.

He smiled when Gellert touched his chin, remembering another old conversation they'd shared back when Albus was beginning to show the faintest brush of facial hair. A beard was a sign of wisdom. All of the greatest wizards were shown with large, bushy beards. It was a status symbol, yet he remembered the laughter as Gellert had touched his face. It was the same sound that Gellert gave now which is what most likely prompted him to ask Gellert to travel home with him.
He took Gellert's hand, pulling the young man close. He resisted the instinct to wrap his arm around Gellert's waist, deciding to keep a small bit of distance between them. In an instant the world around them spun out of focus, the ground disappearing beneath their feet, only to be replaced by the wooden floors of Albus' flat. He released Gellert's hand and walked towards the kitchen, putting a kettle on in an attempt to bring some normalcy to the already bizarre scene.
"Take a seat," he says. "Do you still take your tea the same way?"
