IT'S BLOODY HOT IN HERE
(no, really. it's seriously hot.)
it's the summer holidays! a perfect time to travel, relax, spend time with loved ones and bask in the sun. the wizarding world is lively with energy at this time of year. everyone seems to want to make the most of their break before september comes around the corner and life returns to its normal, mundane pace. it has been especially exciting with the sporadic and strange appearances of old and new faces. some claim to be from a different world while others claim to be from a different time. then, there are the ones who have simply found themselves waking up to be remarkably younger or older. just remember to keep to your curfews, half-bloods and muggle-borns! those eerie disappearances are still happening in an increasingly alarming rate...

MINISTRY OF MAGIC

for the ones who don't have the good fortune of going on holiday, you won't have to worry about having nothing to do, especially if you're part of the ministry of magic! with all the anomalies happening, you're going to have your hands full registering, documenting, interviewing and/or helping with a multitude of busywork relating to the newcomers. or maybe your job doesn't have anything to do with that. maybe you're on the opposite end and you've been brought in. or maybe you're just a tourist and you want to see if you can catch a glimpse of the minister for magic. whatever your reason is, welcome and stay out of people's way!

DIAGON ALLEY

everyone loves to go shopping and what better place to do it than diagon alley? you'll find mills of people looking at all the different items on sale or on display in store windows. maybe you're here to purchase materials for the upcoming school year or you're out on a date with your significant other. or maybe you actually own or work at one of the many shops here. whatever your reason is, you better be ready for the crowd and the heat.

KNOCKTURN ALLEY

oh no! what are you doing here? turn back right now! knockturn alley is no place for you to be. well, at least it isn't if you aren't a dark arts practitioner or you're not part of some nefarious secret group. just turn around and go back to diagon alley. it's much nicer there, friendlier and safer. have you not heard about all the disappearances going on? you're only asking for trouble stepping into a place like this, even if it's remarkably cool here.

M.I.A.V.I.

not in the mood to go out? or maybe you're stuck in the waiting room at st. mungo's trying to figure out why you're suddenly 10 years older and you need a distraction. disregarding the reason, it's sure a good thing you've conveniently brought along your m.i.a.v.i. so feel free to browse the public network, create your own post, or private message someone!

OTHER

not interested in any of the options above? feel free to make up your own! the wizarding world is huge, so get creative with it. the setting is the summer of 1980. have fun testing out and shaping your characters, mingle with others, and start getting those crs down!

[holy shit is this..... it can't be............... the merlin???

asking for recommendations of history books?????

this is his time to shine]

Normally for histories I of course recommend Bathilda Bagshot. She's very thorough with vetting her sources and citing them, and she does have a book on the topic. It's titled Arthur and Camelot, Dispelling Myths. If you want to find anything written earlier, that would be an excellent place to start. It shouldn't be difficult to get your hands on it, either, Bagshot histories are very well-known and respected, and for good reason!

[ .. oh. this was surprisingly helpful. perhaps there's something to this silly pen thing, after all. ]

It's available in the bookstore, do you suppose?
I won't have to sacrifice a goat to afford it, will I?
[ he's probably joking, but look, even with magic, books are expensive af when he's from. ]

Yes, there always seems to be copies of most of Bagshot's books at Flourish and Blotts!

[clearly.... because they're just so popular....... yes]

No, they're rather affordable! [not that he's the best judge of what "affordable" is but..... yeah, they're normal modern book price] I would lend you my personal copy but I've sort of been displaced in time and it's roughly 40 years in the future from here. :(

[ """"popular"""", but hey, merlin isn't complaining. he happens to like history. ]

Have things changed much in those forty years?

[some may consider scorpius malfoy to be.... a little bit......... of a history nerd. just a little.]

Don't things always change?

[It's a good non-answer. He probably shouldn't say over this network thing that this isn't really what 1980 is supposed to be like.]

I know forty years isn't much in the grand scheme of things but much happened in that time, and much changed because of it.

[personal profile] kingmaking 2017-07-31 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ just a teensy bit. ]

Depends on your perspective. Things changed very little for centuries in parts of the world.

Mysterious. Perhaps this is a conversation best had in person?

[personal profile] engorgimpressed 2017-08-01 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely why it's a difficult question to answer! From my perspective, the changes are significant, but for someone else, it might not be very different at all!

I wouldn't say no to that!

[He's trying so hard to be cautious and not say anything damning on this thing]

Good. Tell me where you'd like to meet and I'll sort out how to get there.

[ u will learn that merlin is Very Decisive about things, no waffling here. ]

I'll meet you at Flourish and Blotts! It's a bookstore on Diagon Alley, so I can show you where to find that history, too! :)

I'll be the blond in the Historicals section!

[Sure enough, it doesn't take him long to get there. He knows where he's going, after all. He'll page through something recent, that he's read in his own time, to see the changes.]
kingmaking: (room to breathe)

[personal profile] kingmaking 2017-08-04 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
--Scorpius Malfoy?

[ that didn't take long, but then, merlin's also resourceful and not scared to ask for directions, so.

still, the figure standing in the mouth of the aisle is Tiny and also a bit wild-looking, with little charms braided into his tangled hair and dark eyes that don't quite look human.

he glances the blond over with a thoughtful frown, then crosses toward him, finally offering a hand out. ]

Merlin. I suppose you might have guessed that, though.

[personal profile] engorgimpressed 2017-08-04 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's me!

[Scorpius turns to greet Merlin it's bloody Merlin he's been talking to and is going to keep talking to Merlin and yes, there's no small amount of awe in his expression.

He's-- shorter than Scorpius expected, but that makes sense, people tended to get shorter the farther in the past you went and wow why do people always draw him as an old man with a floor-length beard? He looks far more like the kind of god-like figure wizarding kind makes him out to be like this.]

I-- did. Yes. I did guess that. [It sort of feels like he should kiss Merlin's hand rather than shake it but he shakes it anyway.

Historical figures are people too, Scorpius, you know this first-hand, you know this very well.

But it's bloody Merlin!!]

Oh, um-- [He turns back to the shelf, pulling out a book and tilting it towards Merlin.] Here's the one I told you about, by Bagshot. I dunno if you have any money, but-- well, my family's got enough to last us another few centuries, and I was thinking of getting a few things myself while I was here.
kingmaking: (but there were so many red flags)

[personal profile] kingmaking 2017-08-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ scorpius isn't the first person to act a bit weird around him after he'd introduced himself, and if he didn't have some idea of why, he'd be annoyed. as it is, he realizes that he's a bit well-known, and his name is used as a swear-word like some sort of pseudo-deity. it's.. odd, but so is everything about his life, so honestly, he should be accustomed to it all by now.

at least scorpius recovered himself well, and immediately offered out useful information at that, so merlin decides he's going to like this young man.

he takes the book gratefully, stroking fingers over the binding with something like awe. if nothing else about the future is good, the ready availability of books is the one thing merlin appreciates. ]
Do you have any idea what this one little book would be worth in my time? [ he gives him a dryly amused glance up, then lets his gaze drop to the pages as he leafs carefully through them. he shuts the book at last with a snap, seeming satisfied. ]

Yes, I will allow you to purchase this for me, with the understanding that I will pay you back immediately upon sorting out the preferred method of doing so. [ a beat. ] I don't like being in debt to people. It's nothing personal.

[personal profile] engorgimpressed 2017-08-10 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Scorpius laughs.] That's one thing we've got going for us now- books aplenty. I've spent more time reading books than speaking, I think, and I'm told I'm a bit of a chatterbox once I get going.

[Scorpius picks out a few more books for himself while Merlin peruses through the one he'd handed him. They're all accounts from 1940 and forward, recent history. He scans through the table of contents of one as Merlin speaks again.] That's fine, though there's no rush, I really don't mind. You can even just give it to me once you're done with it, since my own copy isn't in this time. [He's never had to truly consider the monetary cost of something in his life, which may be obvious.

He closes the book and meets Merlin's gaze again, something decisive there.]
You wanted to hear about the differences forty years from now too, right?

[A subtle wave of his wand has a Muffliato cast over them. Not many people frequent the Histories section, but it's still not private. Even with the charm, he keeps his voice low.]

To start with, all this blood-purity nonsense is no longer such an issue. With individual people, sure, of course, that sort of thing doesn't just-- go away, but... it's not written into the very law any longer. Not even subtly.
