He has to say something, doesn't he?
"Um-- yes! I'd like to discuss a special request? I heard of a very powerful healing potion that takes advantage of the restorative properties of phoenix tears and I'd like to order one."
There is no such potion, of course. He'd already decided this approach was a dumb idea, why did he go with it just now? Ugh, this was stupid, what was he thinking?
no subject
"I'm sorry, what?" It's clearly difficult for her to even admit defeat, though her next comment clarifies: "I'm afraid whoever told you about that was lying to you, because nothing of that description exists. Phoenix tears are notoriously unstable and can't be saved to be used long-term in potions. I don't know who told you that they could be, but they're no friend of yours."
She smiles tiredly, resting her cheek on her knuckles. "If you tell me what you need though, I can come up with something. I promise I've got some very powerful potions here already."
no subject
What is he going to do? He knows better than to think this is something he can solve all on his own. "I knew that about phoenix tears. Imagine if they could be stabilized, though. Wouldn't that be something?" He smiles shakily, as though this is remotely the conversation he wants to be having. "I'm sorry, this was-- a stupid idea. I don't know what I was thinking."
no subject
Maybe it's a little funny - for someone as rich as the Potter family, Lily Evans is from an area far more working class and it shows in her mannerisms and accent and doesn't do her any favors with the rich purebloods around.
Anyway.
"Sometimes even stupid ideas work out. Tea?"
no subject
He sits on the stool, feeling ridiculous and small and sort of like he might cry. "Tea would be nice. Thank you."
Maybe he should just be as upfront as he can. Sure, he'd learned that whole lesson about not interfering with the past but clearly someone else already did long before 1980, so does it really matter when this isn't the source of the actual issue? Of course, he can't very well tell her she's supposed to sacrifice herself for her infant son and thus end a war and then, inadvertently through said sacrifice, end a war again... but he can tell her some things. "Have you heard about the people coming in from the future and such?" Good a place to start as any.
no subject
She doesn't know that of course but she has heard about the displaced. She nods, both elbows on the counter and chin resting on her hands. "Mm, I have. Future and past, people waking up the wrong age. As twisted toward the Ministry the papers are, they're just as confused about it as everyone else is."
Lily frowns slightly, looking him over. It's not calculating, just curious. "Are you displaced too? Did the Ministry make you sign in? I'm sorry."
no subject
He's afraid he'll tell her too much, but he's more afraid of what this world will be like if he doesn't tell her anything. For all it's tragedy, all the people whose lives were ended too early, Scorpius has seen first-hand what happens when you try to change that, and it only ever makes things worse. Horrible as it may be, they have to get everything back to how it was.
He nods at the questions; he was made to sign in, but due to his blood-status, was given no trace and no restrictions. The Malfoy name actually carries weight still, here. "Yes... I'm sort of glad this is a known thing, because it makes me sound less mad. I'm from the future, and-- this isn't what this year was meant to be like."
He purses his lips thoughtfully, picking up a quill that was on the counter and fussing with it as he tries to work out the right words. This is so important. "And I don't mean it like-- when people idealize a certain time and think it's one way and it wasn't actually like that at all. I mean things are factually wrong! It's not just the time thing, with the displaced people, it had to have happened far before that. And I have to fix it, because if it continues like this, I-- I don't even want to think about what the world will look like if I can get back to my own time."
no subject
But she nods. It's not something to take lightly or lie about. She's just met this boy, but he's sought her out for a reason.
"I understand." A beat. "I don't know what changed, but... Things are only going to get worse from here no matter what. Something must be done either way and we can't just sit around pretending that things are going to get set to rights on their own. I'm not going to ask you what's different in the future. I don't want to know if I don't have to. Things necessary to what we're doing, tell me. Otherwise, I shouldn't know."
Her fingernails, perfectly rounded but darkened with potionwork, tap on the counter. "No one has access to time turners to see how to fix anything." Simply, "and with things the way they are, there's no guarantee they'd even work properly as it is."
no subject
He takes a breath, glancing around as though there might be someone else in the shop to overhear. There isn't, of course. "The most important thing is-- Tom Riddle was never Minister for Magic. I think-- I think, whatever's gone wrong, it led to that. And that's what's messed everything up. It has to be."
no subject
Tom Riddle was never Minister for Magic.
Lily can feel the heat of tears pricking at the corners of her eyes but she refuses to let them fall in front of a stranger, blinking them away and tipping her head back a moment before taking a deep breath to steel herself.
"Sorry, I just... That doesn't sound likely or honestly even possible from where I'm standing." It's clear a part of her is still twisted tight and close to the chest just in case this is some kind of sting or something - she could get in real trouble for trying to stir up dissent.
"Time is strange, after all. Are you sure?"
no subject
At the very least, the rambling is about as genuine as genuine gets. "Anyway, the point of me saying all that is-- with things like they are here, I don't know if this world will ever get there. In fact, I'm fairly certain it won't even come close! But-- if we can change it back to how it was before, it will get there. I know it's a lot to ask, to trust me, but I don't have any other way to prove that what I'm saying is true."
no subject
No, scratch that. Very overwhelmed.
Still, it looks like she believes him. "He's not Minister for Magic but he's something else, isn't he? There's no way someone like him just doesn't exist."
no subject
She believes him, though, and that's worthy of a sigh of relief. After a moment, he nods, in answer to her question. "'Something else' is a good phrase for it, yes... but he was something people could fight. I-- I looked for you because, in the 1980 that I know of, you were one of the people fighting him."
no subject
There's the briefest pause. "There's no trace on muggleborns and half-bloods, is there? Because he's not Minister."
There are wheels turning in her head. Important ones. There's something sharp and almost dangerous in her gaze for a moment before she shoves it back down. "So he's crafted something monstrous of himself and there's a war on. By your time things are sorted, but they're not for this time. How long does it take?"
no subject
"The war ends October 31st, 1981..." Not quite the answer to her question, really, but stay with him. "Most people were convinced he'd been killed, for over a decade. But he-- came back, in June of 1995. And there was a second war, that ended in May, 1998. That's when it truly ended."
That's not getting into Delphini but-- well. Yeah. It's already complicated, and Lily Evans is clever enough to know wars don't end on a clean break.
no subject
"He faked his death, or--you know what, it doesn't matter. He wouldn't wait so long if he had a means of returning sooner. So almost twenty years from now before he's finally gone." Better than him never being gone, she thinks. "But he is gone."
Sighing, Lily chews on her lip a moment before she speaks again. "I met a young man recently. It turns out he's my son. From... From what I can only assume is the timeline you're from. The way he looked at me at first, you'd think he'd seen a ghost."
Looking at Scorpius, she speaks very softly. "I don't see him through to the end, do I?"
no subject
Scorpius can't quite control his reaction at the news that she's met her son, because that means that Harry Potter is here, in this time, and that's-- that has to be good, right? If anyone stands a chance at figuring this out, it's Harry freaking Potter. His mind buzzes at how to find him and what to say for a moment. She'd called him a young man, but how young? He-- the train of thought abruptly derails, at the question.
He'd meant not to tell anyone any details he knew about their deaths. It just wasn't on, with time travel. Even if time couldn't get anymore broken than it already was, it would just be a cruel thing to do.
She already knows, though, and he doesn't nod, but he doesn't deny it either. "I'm sorry." He says instead, and he is, because it's not fair, to tell her about that future and then for her to know she won't ever get to see it, no matter what they do.
no subject
It's all she wants. For him to be gone and for their world to rebuild without him. To be something better than what it is now.
The rest of the conversation is sobering though and her breath shakes once when he says I'm sorry. It takes her a moment but she smiles at him sadly and shakes her head, reaching out to pat the back of his hand. "Don't worry yourself about it. You said it's a war. In war, things happen. Sacrifices have to be made. Sometimes... Sometimes, people die." It's difficult to say about yourself though and she swallows, shaking her head again. "It needs doing. We'll have to find out how to right things."
Just like that. Even though she's going to die once things are fixed. "We just... We just won't tell James or Sirius or Remus about that part. They'd jump right in if it were any of them, but they'd try to come up with all sorts of plans if it were me." A beat. "I never know about Peter. I don't think he likes me very much sometimes."
ANYWAY.
"We'll do what we have to in order to right things. Don't worry."
no subject
She keeps talking, about the men that everyone knows of as The Marauders in Scorpius' time, and Scorpius just won't mention that none of them survive both wars either, and oh-- should he say something about Peter Pettigrew?
I don't think he likes me very much sometimes.
Maybe he should say something about Peter Pettigrew. Everything's all weird, but-- but he should say something, right? Or would that only make the likelihood of a betrayal in this timeline even greater, because he'd have implanted distrust?
Time travel conundrums give him a bloody headache sometimes.
He draws up a smile of his own, trying to look far more confident than he feels. "If we can figure out when and how this timeline diverged from the one I'm from, as well as find a way back to correct that, then it'll be as though all this never happened." He speaks with the surety of someone who's done something like that before. Funny, that. "But that's easier said than done. Until then, whatever Riddle's longterm plans are, we need to put a stop to them."
